The Office of the Sheriff Releases Official University City Townhomes ‘Encampment’ Statement on August 8, 2022

~ Philadelphia, PA – On Monday, August 8, 2022 at 9:00am ET ~

On Monday, August 8, 2022 at 9:00am ET, a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas ordered that the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office oversee the safe and orderly removal of tents, fencing, posters and signs from the private property known as the University City Townhomes ‘encampment’ located at 3990 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Our office is doing our duty as a law enforcement extension of the court, as we do each and every day to protect our community.

The lack of affordable housing is an important issue that needs to be addressed by the legislative and executive branches, who may be able to offer another solution to this growing problem.

As many of you know, Sheriff Bilal remains sympathetic to this issue of displacement and will continue to assist in the needs of the underserved population in Philadelphia. As such, Sheriff Rochelle Bilal remains steadfast on keeping people in their homes. Any criticism of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Rochelle Bilal related to the enforcement of a court order enjectment is misplaced and misdirected.

Unfortunately, there were circumstances beyond our control that required action. The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office will continue to offer resources and information for individuals to educate themselves on the City of Philadelphia and its process.

The Office of the Sheriff and Sheriff Rochelle Bilal want to acknowledge and thank the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Deputies along with our law enforcement partners at the Philadelphia Police Department for their assistance in ensuring that this was a peaceful removal of tents, signs, and fencing. There is one incident to report, an individual was given a summary citation for disorderly conduct for allegedly assaulting a sheriff deputy and that individual was sent home. In addition, no individual was removed from the property.
